Barnard 87, at top left, is a dark nebula called the Parrot's Head Nebula. Barnard 292 is just right of center. B87 was cataloged by Edwin Emerson Barnard in a 1919 paper in the Astrophysical Journal, On the Dark Markings of the Sky with a Catalogue of 182 such Objects. Barnard's photographs of dark nebulae were published in his book A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way. Dark nebulae are opaque clouds of dust and gas in space that block the light of stars behind them. | |
