Peering through the port of a vacuum welding box, a technician for Westinghouse Electric Corporation's atomic power department guides equipment that is capping the end of an alloy tube which will contain atomic fuel for a power reactor. The tube, made of zirconium alloy, is inserted in the end of the welding box visible in the foreground. Controls at rear tell the technician, Joseph Campbell, how much air has been pumped out of the welding box and replaced with helium. Mr. Campbell positions the tubing by wearing the rubber gloves sealed to the inside of the port where his left hand is resting. The inert helium atmosphere which fills the box eliminates impurities which might contaminate the weld. The protective plate of dark glass, always over the viewing port during operations, reduces glare from the welding arc. | |
