Colorized image of Icebergs and the Aurora Borealis, from October 1849. This image was published in the Illustrated London News to accompany an article about a search for Sir John Franklin's lost Arctic expedition. John Franklin (1786-1847) was a British Royal Navy officer and Arctic explorer. He disappeared on his last expedition, attempting to chart and navigate a section of the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. The icebound ships were abandoned and the entire crew perished from starvation, hypothermia, tuberculosis, lead poisoning and scurvy. Many expeditions subsequently tried to find some trace of Franklin. | |
