Platax altissimus is a fossil species from Monte Bolca. Monte Bolca is a lagerstette near Verona, Italy that was one of the first fossil sites with high quality preservation known to Europeans, and is still an important source of fossils from the Eocene. The fish and other specimens are so highly preserved that their organs are often completely preserved in fossil form, and even the skin colour can sometimes be determined. Lithograph print from a rare work by G.H.Schubert entitled, Illustrated Geology and Palaeontology, 1886. This series was published from 1896 and is a great work on dinosaur fossils. | |
