Carsten Borchgrevink (1864-1934), leader of the 1898-1900 Southern Cross Expedition, which in 1899 became the first to overwinter on the Antarctic mainland and the first to visit the Great Ice Barrier since the expedition of Sir James Ross nearly sixty years previously. Borchgrevink was an Anglo- Norwegian scientist and explorer. He is credited as being the first person known to have stepped onto the Antarctic continent itself, on 24 January 1895, at Cape Adare. He collected specimens of lichen growing on Possession Island, dispelling the belief that plant life could not exist in Antarctica. | |
