The ship of French explorer Dumont D'Urville (1790-1842) trapped in Antarctic ice floes in 1838-39. The crew are shown making fresh water from the floes. D'Urville explored the south and western Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica. As a botanist and cartographer he left his mark, giving his name to several seaweeds, plants and shrubs, and places such as D'Urville Island. | |
