An illustration of osteoclasts, a type of bone cell responsible for the resorption of bone tissue. Osteoclasts are large, multinucleated cells with a ruffled border and are essential for the maintenance and repair of bones. As osteoclasts break down and re-absorb older bone material, osteoblasts form and remodel new bone. As we age, osteoblasts and the formation of new bone material diminishes. However osteoclasts continue to function, leading to conditions such as osteoporosis, in which bones become weaker and more susceptible to fractures. | |
