Space Shuttle Columbia clears the tower seconds after launch on Mission STS-32 on 9 January 1990. Columbia was carrying the Leasat communications satellite for the US Navy on this flight which was delayed by bad weather over the Kennedy Space Center emergency runway. In addition to deploying Leasat, STS-32 captured the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) satellite in the course of the 11- day stay in space. Columbia returned on 20 January 1990, with the 9.7 tonne LDEF in its cargo bay, at the end of a Shuttle record-breaking mission. | |
