Coronal streamer, Parker Solar Probe image. This image was taken during the probe's first solar encounter, during which the spacecraft flew through the corona, the Sun's outer atmosphere. At its closest point it was only 24.1 million kilometres from the Sun, the closest a spacecraft has ever been. Coronal streamers usually overlie areas of increased solar activity on the Sun's surface. The bright dot below the streamer is Jupiter, the dark spots are image artifacts. The Parker Solar Probe launched in August 2018. Image obtained by the probe's Wide-field Imager for Solar Probe (WISPR) instrument on 8th November 2018 at 27.2 million kilometres from the Sun. | |
