Taking Bertillon measurements. French police officer Alphonse Bertillon (1853-1914) demonstrating how to take a measurement of the left middle finger for the anthropometric system he had developed. Bertillon developed his identification system in 1883. Ten standard physical measurements were taken that could be used to identify criminals who gave false names. Measurements included height, length of right ear, width of head, and reach of the right arm. These measurements were eventually replaced by fingerprinting. This albumen silver print shows a scene from around 1893. | |
