Genesis spacecraft solar wind particles analysis. Genesis was launched in August 2001 to collect samples of solar wind particles. Genesis crashed into the desert in Utah, USA, on 8 September 2004. Despite hitting the ground at an estimated 310 kilometres per hour, some of the gathered material survived. Here, at the Genesis laboratory at NASA's Johnson Space Center, researchers extract solar wind collectors and prepare them for analysis. The samples were analysed to measure solar oxygen isotopic composition and other evidence of how the solar system formed. Photographed in April 2005. | |
