Aneroid barometer, illustration. Vertical section through an aneroid barometer, an instrument for measuring pressure. The instrument consists of a flexible metal box called an aneroid cell or capsule (yellow, centre). The evacuated capsule is prevented from collapsing by a strong spring (yellow, left). Small changes in external air pressure cause the capsule to expand or contract. These movements are amplified by mechanical levers attached to a needle (black) on the face of the barometer, allowing changes in pressure to be read off a dial. Barometers measuring atmospheric pressure are used in weather forecasting. | |
