Hydraulics. Illustration demonstrating hydraulics, the transmission of pressure in liquids. The narrow syringe is connected by a tube to a wider syringe. Pushing in the piston of the smaller syringe exerts a small force over a small area, creating pressure in the fluid which is transmitted to the larger syringe. At the larger piston the pressure is the same, but exerted over a larger area, so the force acting is magnified, but moves the piston a shorter distance. Hydraulics depends on Pascal's law, which states that a change in pressure at any point in an enclosed fluid at rest is transmitted undiminished to all points in the fluid. Pressure is calculated by dividing the force by the area over which it acts. | |
