A rincon, or abandoned meander, of the San Juan river in Southern Utah, USA, near Mexican Hat. The term meander derives from the Meander located in present-day Turkey and known to the Ancient Greeks as Maiandros. It is characterised as a river with a very convoluted path across a floodplain. As a result, even in Classical Greece (and in later Greek thought) the name of the river had become a common noun meaning anything convoluted and winding, such as decorative patterns or speech and ideas, as well as the geomorphological feature. | |
