Nautilus crew in the Arctic on an ice floe. The USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine. Part of the US Navy, it was operational from 1955 to 1980. It completed a pioneering passage in the Arctic from 22 July to 5 August 1958, crossing the Arctic Ocean from the Bering Sea to the Greenland Sea, passing submerged beneath the North Pole on 3 August 1958. | |
