Asteroid 2004 EW95. Computer illustration of the exiled asteroid 2004 EW95, the first carbon-rich asteroid confirmed to exist in the Kuiper Belt and a relic of the primordial Solar System. Most Kuiper belt objects are composed largely of frozen volatiles ('ices'), such as methane, ammonia and water. Carbon-rich objects such as 2004 EW95 are thought to be rare. This object likely formed in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and was transported billions of kilometres from its origin to its current home in the Kuiper Belt in the outer Solar System. | |
