Yalode Crater, Ceres. Satellite image of the Yalode crater on the dwarf planet Ceres, showing a series of linear depressions known as Nar Sulcus, and a number of small impact craters (round). Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt, which lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The widest of these depressions measures around 1.5 kilometres wide. It is thought the Nar Sulcus features formed when extensional stresses pulled the surface of Ceres apart. Some of the linear features cut through several impact craters (top), indicating that the fractures are younger than those particular craters. Imaged by the Framing Camera on NASA's Dawn space probe. | |
