Ares V rocket, illustration. This is a depiction of this cargo launcher discarding its booster rockets as it ascends to Earth orbit. This rocket was planned for use in NASA's Constellation Program to send astronauts to the Moon by 2020, using Orion spacecraft. The Ares rockets were to use a combination of liquid oxygen/hydrogen tanks (orange) and solid-fuel rocket boosters (white). Ares V was planned to be around 100 metres tall. The rockets were named for the Greek god of Mars, and are named 'I' and 'V' after the Apollo program's Saturn I and Saturn V rockets. The Constellation program was cancelled in 2009. | |
