1904 PhD thesis of Polish-French physicist Marie Curie (1867-1934, nee Marya Sklodowska). Titled 'Recherches sur les substances radioactives' (Research on Radioactive Substances), Curie submitted her thesis as part of her studies at the Sorbonne university in Paris, France. Born in Poland, she had became a student in France in 1891. There she met and married the French physicist Pierre Curie (1859-1906) in 1895. They isolated the radioactive elements polonium and radium in 1898. Marie and Pierre won shares of the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics for their work on radioactivity. Marie won the 1911 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for the discovery of polonium and radium. This is the title page to the second edition of her thesis, with revisions and corrections.
