Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) waste shipment inspection. US environmental regulatory worker inspecting a cargo of the organic chlorinated chemical polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). The inspection is being carried out under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act that controls the handling of hazardous waste. If not contained and disposed of properly, PCBs are highly toxic organic pollutants that persist in the environment and cause cancers. Production has been banned worldwide since 2001. This waste shipment is part of the environmental clean-up project (Fernald Environmental Management Project, FEMP) by the US Department of Energy (DoE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at a former uranium processing facility, the Fernald site in Ohio, USA. This site was part of the USA's nuclear weapons production process. The clean-up project took place between 1989 and 2006. | |
