Siphonophorae, 1904 illustration. The Siphonophorae are an order of marine animals each of which consists of a colony composed of multiple organisms. The venomous Portuguese man o' war belongs to this order. This illustration is from 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature, 1904) by German biologist Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919). The illustrations were by Haeckel, with the lithography by Adolf Giltsch (1852-1911). As well as illustrating animals and plants, the artworks represented Haeckel's philosophy and worldview, with the specimens arranged for specific aesthetic and visual impact. | |
