Halley's Comet, officially designated 1P/Halley, is a short period comet visible from Earth every 74 to 79 years. Halley is a naked eye object that might appear twice in a lifetime. The next appearance is calculated to be mid-2061. During its 1986 apparition, Halley's comet became the first comet to be observed in detail by a spacecraft fleet. The closest approach (within 80 kilometres) was achieved by the European spacecraft Giotto, which took pictures of the nucleus. | |
