Milky Way, zodiacal light and airglow over campsite. Arc of the Milky Way in the night sky above tents at a camp site in the Himalayas. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. On the ground are tents, a glacial lake and a glacier. Airglow (green glow on the horizon) is a phenomenon where a planetary atmosphere emits a faint glow when atoms are excited by sunlight. Zodiacal light (centre right) is is sunlight reflected from dust particles orbiting in the plane of the solar system. From Earth it is seen as a cone of light along the ecliptic, the orbital path of the Sun, Moon and planets in the sky. Photographed on the border of China and Bhuta, on 8 October 2016.
