Illustration of archaeopteryx. This animal, whose name means 'ancient wing' is widely thought to be one of the first flying dinosaurs. It represents a transition between non-avian dinosaurs and true birds. Like birds it had feathers; like reptiles it had teeth and a bony jaw. This creature lived in the Jurassic period about 150 million years ago in what is now Germany. Its size was roughly between that of a magpie and a raven. It probably fed on insects, lizards and juvenile dinosaurs such as compsognathus. | |
