Airglow over Laigu Glacier. Yellowish-green airglow and faint band of gegenschein shining in the night sky above Laigu Glacier, Qamdo Prefecture, Tibet, China. Laigu Glacier is the joint name for a group of glaciers. It is one of the three largest glaciers in the world. The name Laigu comes from a nearby Tibetan village. Airglow is a phenomenon where a planetary atmosphere emits a faint glow when atoms are excited by sunlight. Also visible is a phenomenon called gegenschein, an example of sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust. Photographed on 18 October 2015. | |
