Hydrogen isotope filter, abstract image. This filter is for use in a neutron beam apparatus. Neutrons are fundamental particles found in atomic nuclei. Typically emitted by a suitable radioactive source or nuclear reactor, neutrons have applications in various areas of physics, particularly the field known as neutron optics. Here, heavy isotopes of hydrogen (deuterium and tritium) are being separated on a special filter at cryogenic temperatures to be used in cold neutron experiments. Examples of neutron optics include neutron spectrometry, neutron diffraction, neutron scattering, and neutron tomography. | |
