George Washington (1732-1799), first President of the United States of America. Washington was born into a moderately prosperous family of planters at Popes Creek, Virginia. He trained as a surveyor and invested in large amounts of land. He then joined the Virginia Militia and fought in the French and Indian War. During the American War of Independence he served as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and was instrumental in forcing the surrender of the British. He left the army in 1783 to become a statesman. In 1787 he presided over the Constitutional Convention that formed the new federal government and in 1789 was unanimously elected the first President of the United States. Washington retired in 1797, and in 1799 caught a severe winter chill. He most likely died from a combination of severe epiglottitis compounded by extreme blood letting by his doctors. | |
