Movement of Earth's continents, illustration. At top is the Earth as it was 250 million years ago (mya). All land was concentrated in a supercontinent known as Pangea. During the Triassic Period, around 200 mya, Pangea broke up into a north supercontinent Laurasia and a southern supercontinent Gondwanaland. At centre is the Earth as it was during the Jurassic Period, 150 mya. What are now South America and Africa are still close, but the other continents are drifting apart. In the Cretaceous Period, around 50 mya, South America and Africa have separated. Present day Earth is at bottom. | |
