IXV re-entry vehicle, artwork. This spacecraft is the Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle (IXV). On 11 February 2015, the IXV conducted its first 100-minute space flight. It is the first ever lifting body to perform full atmospheric re-entry from orbital speed. Following re-entry, the IXV landed on the surface of the Pacific Ocean 7300 kilometres from the beginning of its re-entry. The IXV is a testing system, not intended to be crewed and only 4.4 metres in length. It has no wings, but uses two flaps on its lower rear edge to control re-entry. | |
