Australopithecus afarensis. This is a reconstruction of a 3 year old Australopithecus afarensis female made from a fossilised skull and almost complete skeleton. She is known as Selam. The thigh bones showed that she was able to walk upright by this age. The bones were found in Dikika, Ethiopia in 2000. They have been dated as 3.3 million years old. A. afarensis lived between 3.9 and 2.9 million years ago and is thought to be an ancestor of modern humans. | |
