Scutella is an extinct genus of flat, marine sea urchins in the family Scutelleridae, that lived during Oligocene to Quaternary times. They belong to the order of Clypeasteroida, of which many similar species live up to present times. Sand dollar is a popular name for the flat and circular tests of these animals, a rigid calcitic skeleton that was covered, while alive, with soft skin and hairy spines. A distinctive feature of the tests is their radial pentagonal (fivefold) symmetry. This specimen is from Miocene chalk deposits in Doue La Fontaine, France. Actual diameter of each is about 55 mm. | |
