Sappho (c.630 BC–c.570 BC), Ancient Greek poet. Shown here in the form of a double bust, Sappho was from the Greek island of Lesbos. She composed lyric poetry, which was typically sung or chanted with the accompaniment of a musical instrument called a lyre. It was also known as melic (melodic) poetry.
