Micromechanical turbine part. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the turbine from a tiny drill that could be used to remove blockages in blood vessels. The part was made from a reservoir of an acrylic liquid, which was polymerized in the areas where computer-guided lasers were aimed at it. The turbine is used to drive a drill, small enough to be fitted to the end of a medical catheter. This could be passed into coronary blood vessels (blood vessels that supply the heart muscle) to clear blockages from their walls. Blocked coronary arteries (usually by cholesterol deposits) can lead to heart attacks. Magnification: x50 at 6x7cm size. | |
