Hammered shield lichen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of section through a hammered shield lichen (Parmelia sulcata). Lichens are organisms formed by the symbiotic association of a fungus and a green alga or cyanobacterium. The fungus forms a network of finger-like hyphae that extract nutrients from the photosynthesising algae. The thick hyphae pointing downwards are known as rhizines which enable the lichen to adhere to rock or tree surfaces. Parmelia lichen are classified as foliose due to their flat appearance and leaf-like structures. Magnification: x200 when printed 10 centimetres wide. | |
