Slime mould fruiting body. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of fruiting bodies (sporangia) of the slime mould Badhamia utricularis. The delicate outer wall (peridium, blue) of some of the sporangia have burst, releasing spores (not seen). Slime moulds are not fungi, but a separate group with complex life cycles. The sporangia are produced when the slime mould encounters unfavourable conditions. Magnification: x16 at 6x6cm size. | |
