Slime mould trail. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the trail (yellow) left by a slime mould of the species Physarum polycephalum. Bacteria (blue) and the slime mould's spores (orange) are seen in the track. Slime moulds were once thought to be fungi, but are now classed as a separate group. Most spend part of their life-cycle as a slug-shaped mass that can move slowly to find food. In the background at upper right, a fruiting body (sporangium, dark green) is seen. Sporangia release spores. They are produced when the slime mould encounters unfavourable conditions. Magnification: x125 at 6x7cm size. | |
