Vibrio cholerae. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a single Vibrio cholerae bacterium. This is the causative agent of cholera in humans. It is a Gram-negative comma-shaped bacillus bacterium (at bottom). The single hair-like flagellum is used for movement. Vibrio cholerae is a waterborne pathogen, transmitted to humans through drinking water contaminated by human or animal faeces. Cholera infects the intestine causing vomiting and diarrhoea, and the patient may die from severe dehydration. Outbreaks of cholera are associated with poor sanitary conditions and may occur in epidemic proportions. Magnification: x10, 000 at 5x7cm size. | |
