Chemie - META, Metaldehyde, 2, 4, 6, 8-Tetramethyl-1, 3, 5, 7-tetraoxacyclooctane - MET - META (Markenname der Fa. Lonza) ist der Wirkstoff in Schneckenkorn - Nimmt eine Schnecke Meta auf, reagiert sie ziemlich rasch mit einer starken Schleimabsonderung. Diese Reaktion ist dermaßen heftig, dass die Tiere damit ihre Körperreserven verbrauchen und gleichzeitig viel Wasser verlieren. Dies führt schließlich zum Kollaps der Schleimzellen. Die Schleimzellen im Darm und die der Haut werden damit irreversibel zerstört, was unabhängig von den Umgebungsbedingungen unweigerlich zum Tod des Tieres führt. Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass sich die Tiere bei 2°C und mit ausreichender Verfügbarkeit an Wasser nicht mehr erholen. Von Meta sind keine Beeinträchtigungen von Nützlingen wie Regenwürmern oder schneckenfressenden Laufkäfern bekannt. Meta gilt bei oraler Aufnahme als moderat toxisch und löst keine negativen Reaktionen bei Hautkontakt aus - Lichtmikroskop, Polarisiertes Licht 40:1 - When a slug consumes Meta, it reacts fairly rapidly by secreting large amounts of mucus.
