Caricature of the British physicist and computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee (born 1955). Berners-Lee is best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web. After working in industry he moved to CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. Between 1989 and 1994, whilst working at CERN, he developed the web, a global network for information sharing based on hypertext documents and accessed via the internet. In 1994, Berners-Lee founded the Web Consortium W3C, the International Web standards body of which he is the director. Berners-Lee was knighted in 2004. | |
