High grade ductal breast cancer. Light micrograph of cells in a tissue sample from an invasive ductal breast cancer (malignant tumour). This specimen shows the presence of an inflammatory infiltrate (white blood cells with dark purple nuclei), an indication of a high grade of cancer. The cells present include lymphocytes, plasma cells, histiocytes, neutrophils and mast cells. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Symptoms include painless lumps in the breast, a dark discharge from the nipple, and an indentation of the nipple. Early diagnosis can be made by mammography or self-examination. Once a cancer has spread, the prognosis is poor. | |
