Mars 2020 rover camera mast, illustration. The Mars 2020 mission, scheduled for launch in July 2020, is aimed at placing the Mars 2020 rover on the surface of Mars. The rover's planned landing is in February 2021. It duplicates and upgrades much of the technology used on the previous mission, the Mars Science Laboratory that landed in 2012. The Mars 2020 rover will have 23 cameras. Those mounted on its main camera mast include: two Navcam cameras, two Mastcam-Z cameras, and a SuperCam (remote microimager) camera. SuperCam is able to carry out imaging and chemical composition analysis and mineralogy of rocks from a distance. The mission is part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program. | |
