Hippocrates. 1880 illustration of a bust of the Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates of Kos (c.460-370 BC). Hippocrates is considered the father of medicine. His influence survives in the Hippocratic oath, a set of medical ethics that some medical students take when they have completed their training. He founded a medical school on the Aegean island of Kos (Cos) known as the Hippocratic School of Medicine, where he taught his ideas on medicine and establishing it as a discipline distinct from other fields with which it had traditionally been associated (theurgy and philosophy), thus establishing medicine as a profession. | |
