Frederic Bartholdi. 1867 illustration of the French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904). Bartholdi is best known for designing the Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World) in 1886. He produced a number of other works, including the Lion of Belfort (1880), a large lion sculpture carved into a cliff at Belfort, France, to commemorate a battle in the Franco-Prussian War in which he had served. Bartholdi was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1886. | |
