| Congenital cholesteatoma of the ear canal, otoscope view. This rare condition (present from birth) occurs when the squamous epithelium in the middle ear (the so-called epidermoid formation) fails to regress as normally occurs. Instead, it develops into a slowly growing mass of shed squamous cells (keratin, swelling at upper left) surrounded by a thin layer of actively dividing squamous epithelium. This example, in a 2-year-old child, was surgically removed. | |
