Glomus tumour, otoscope view. This rare tumour affects the chemoreceptor tissue adjacent to the jugular vein in the middle ear near the adjacent base of the skull. It is a benign tumour, but locally erosive and can cause serious damage to the lower cranial nerves. There are two types: glomus tympanic which is restricted to the middle ear, and glomus jugulare which arises in the skull base. The tumours are often accompanied by a pulsatile form of tinnitus. | |
