| Mastoid cavity and cholesteatoma, otoscope view. This cavity inside the ear has been formed following surgery to treat a condition known as a cholesteatoma, where a mass of dead skin cells accumulates on the eardrum (typmanic membrane). In a mastoidectomy, the eroded area is removed and the mastoid area reconstructed, as seen here. This 'old style' cavity has a poor shape and two residual cholesteatoma growths (white) are present. This means a new mastoidectomy operation will be needed. Serious consequences of a cholesteatoma include profound hearing loss, vertigo, facial nerve damage, brain abscesses, and foul-smelling discharges. | |
