Discharge from eardrum with grommet (white), otoscope view. Grommets (also called tympanostomy tubes) are inserted into the tympanic membrane (eardrum) to relieve the build up of fluid and pressure seen in severe cases of otitis media (middle ear infections). Here, there is a mucoid discharge from the grommet following a viral upper respiratory tract infection which has resulted in a secondary otitis externa (outer ear infection) with inflamed and infected skin along the ear canal. | |
