Gustav Ratzenhofer (1842-1904), Austrian sociologist, philosopher and army officer. Ratzenhofer's military career as a watchmaker in the Austrian Army saw him rise to the rank of Field Marshal. He left the army in 1901, and continued his studies in sociology and philosophy. His theories, which he described as a form of 'positive monism', were based on the writings of Comte, Spencer and Darwin. This approach influenced early social policies in the USA. | |
