Coloured scanning electronmicrograph (SEM) of the surface of a tapeworm (Eubothrium crassum). E. crassum is a widely distributed intestinal parasite of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.), brown trout and sea trout (Salmo trutta). The basic structure of an adult tapeworm consists of a head (scolex), a neck and a chain of segments (proglottids) which possess a protective tegument. As tapeworms do not have a gut, all nutrient acquisition occurs through the tegument. Microvilli or microtriches enlarge the surface area of the tegument and aid nutrient uptake.
