Seminoma. Section through a human testicle showing a seminoma, a malignant tumour of the testis. At centre is the cancer (white). Normal sperm producing tissue has been pushed to the area surrounding the tumour. Seminomas are the more common of the two main types of testicular cancer. They have a peak incidence in men aged about 30, and usually develop as painless swellings in the scrotum. Seminomas are composed of a single kind of cell (probably originating as sperm-producing cells). Treatment is the surgical removal of the testis (orchidectomy). Anticancer drugs and radiotherapy are used to control the spread of tumour cells; if treated early prognosis is good. | |
